Wet TIMING Belts CAUSING Big Problems?

What is a wet belt?

Wet timing belts, also known as wet cambelts, are a type of timing belt that operates within the engine oil. Unlike traditional dry timing belts, they are designed to be lubricated by the engine oil, which can lead to potential issues like belt degradation and oil contamination.

What are wet cambelts?

Wet cambelts are a specific type of timing belt that runs inside the engine oil. They are designed to be lubricated by the engine oil, which can help reduce friction and potentially extend the belt's lifespan. Manufacturers like Ford, PSA (now Stellantis), and Volkswagen are known to use wet belt systems. They are primarily used in newer engines designed for improved efficiency and reduced emissions. Some common vehicles that utilize wet timing belts include Ford Fiesta, Ford Focus, Ford Transit, Peugeot 208, Citroën Berlingo, and Volkswagen models.

How they work:

The wet belt is enclosed within the engine and lubricated by the oil. This lubrication is intended to reduce friction and potentially improve engine performance and fuel efficiency. Wet belts help synchronize the engine's upper and lower components.

Potential issues and maintenance:

Due to their exposure to engine oil, heat, and other factors, wet cambelts can degrade more rapidly than traditional belts. Any impurities in the oil, like soot or crystalline particles, can accelerate belt wear and cause the belt to disintegrate, potentially leading to oil blockages. Regular inspections and timely replacement are crucial to prevent engine damage. Symptoms of a failing wet belt can include engine misfires, unusual noises, oil leaks, and check engine lights. Replacing a wet belt is a complex process that requires specialized knowledge and tools, so it's best to entrust it to experienced technicians.

When to replace:

While some wet cambelts may be designed to last up to 150,000 miles or ten years, they can fail at much lower mileages, sometimes as low as 30,000 miles. Regular oil changes (every year or 10,000 miles, whichever comes first) and potentially shorter wet belt replacement intervals (every 30,000 to 40,000 miles) may be recommended.
